Cocktail of the Month: Apple Cider Mule

The Origins of the Mule

The origins of the Mule cocktail date back to the early 1940s in the United States, when vodka was struggling to gain a foothold in the American market. Back then, vodka was an unknown spirit in the U.S., with most Americans preferring whiskey, gin, or rum. 

John Martin, who had recently acquired the rights to distribute Smirnoff vodka, faced a daunting challenge: how to popularize a spirit that few were familiar with and even fewer enjoyed.

In a chance meeting, Martin crossed paths with Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull, a Los Angeles-based pub known for its homemade ginger beer. Morgan was facing his struggles, as ginger beer wasn't flying off the shelves either. 

The two men decided to combine their underperforming products into a single drink, hoping the fusion would capture the public’s interest. With the help of a third partner, a copper mug manufacturer named Sophie Berezinski, the Moscow Mule was born. This cocktail, made with vodka, ginger beer, and freshly squeezed lime juice, was refreshing and visually appealing when served in Berezinski’s copper mugs.

The cocktail became an instant hit, especially when served in the now-iconic copper mug. This unique presentation was key to the Mule’s success, as the cold copper mug kept the drink icy and gave it a distinct and appealing look. 

The combination of the drink's refreshing taste and its standout presentation quickly made the Moscow Mule a favorite in bars across the country, effectively introducing Americans to vodka and helping propel it into the mainstream.

The Apple Cider Mule

As the Mule’s popularity grew, so did the variations of this refreshing cocktail. Enter the Apple Cider Mule—a seasonal twist perfect for autumn. The Apple Cider Mule replaces the traditional lime juice with crisp, tangy apple cider, giving the drink a warm, spicy flavor that perfectly complements the ginger beer. This variation retains the refreshing qualities of the original Mule while introducing the comforting flavors of apple and spice, making it the perfect choice for the cooler weather.
